How to Change the Oil on Your Helical Pier Drive Head

August 27, 2025 / in Tips / by Admin

Tools & Materials Needed

  • Allen wrench (8mm typical)
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • SAE 80W90 GL-5 oil (capacity listed on hood plate)
  • Clean rags

Step-by-Step Process

Drive head hanging vertically for oil change

Step 1: Position the Drive Head

Keep the drive head attached to the machine, hanging vertically. This ensures a clean drain of used oil.

Removing the drive head drain plug with 8mm Allen

Step 2: Remove the Drain Plug

Using an Allen wrench (8mm typical), remove the drain plug located on the side of the drive head.

Step 3: Drain the Oil

Allow the oil to fully drain into the pan. Once drained, reinstall the drain plug and tighten it hand tight.

Step 4: Lay Drive Head Flat

Place the drive head on the ground with the drain plug pointing straight up at the 12 o’clock position.

Refilling the drive head with oil and accounting for residual oil

Step 5: Refill with Oil

Remove the drain plug again and refill the drive head with SAE 80W90 GL-5 oil. Note: Oil capacity is listed on the metal plate on the hood of your machine.

Step 6: Account for Residual Oil

Some oil will remain in the drive head even after draining, so the refill volume may be slightly less than the listed capacity.

Rotating drive head to 11 o'clock to level oil

Step 7: Level the Oil

Once filled, rotate the drive head from the 12 o’clock position to about the 11 o’clock position. Excess oil will drain from the hole.

Final tightening of the drain plug with an Allen wrench

Step 8: Final Tightening

When no more oil drains out at the 11 o’clock position, replace the drain plug and securely tighten it with the Allen wrench.

Maintenance Notes

Always dispose of used oil according to local regulations.
Record the oil change date and type of oil used in your maintenance log.
Replace oil at recommended service intervals or sooner in heavy-use or harsh conditions.
